AutoCAD: what it does, and how AI handles the paperwork around your drawings

AutoCAD is still where most shop drawings and details get made. An AI Employee can take the checking, chasing and filing that grows around them.

The short answer

An AI Employee can work with AutoCAD drawings and their exports to answer questions, compare versions, track markups and send the right sheet to the right person, once a connection is set up for your company. VeebarTech has not built this connection for clients yet and is not an official Autodesk partner.

  • AutoCAD makes precise flat drawings: plans, details and shop drawings.
  • Most lost time is around the drawing: versions, markups and questions.
  • An AI Employee can compare versions, log markups and answer questions for review.
  • Your drafter keeps drawing. The admin moves off their desk.
001/006The basics

What does AutoCAD actually do?

AutoCAD is Autodesk's drawing software, and it has been around since 1982. It makes precise flat drawings: floor plans, details, site plans and shop drawings that show exactly how a part is made and where it goes.

Unlike a building model, each line in AutoCAD is mostly just a line. That makes it fast and flexible for detail work. It also means the drawing does not know much about itself, so questions take a person to answer.

Many trades live in it. Millwork shops, steel fabricators, mechanical and electrical subs and site engineers all send and receive DWG files, the AutoCAD file format, every week.

002/006Use and reach

How widely is AutoCAD used?

Autodesk does not publish a user count for AutoCAD alone. It does report revenue for AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT together: about $1.57 billion in the year to January 2025, up 8% from about $1.46 billion the year before.

That makes it one of the biggest pieces of design software in the world by sales. The DWG format is so common that most other drawing tools can open it.

So even if your office never draws in AutoCAD, someone on your job almost certainly does, and their files land in your inbox.

Where does AutoCAD slow a team down?

Reviewers often name the subscription price and the learning curve. For a small shop, a full seat for someone who mostly opens and prints drawings is hard to justify.

The bigger cost is the paperwork. Shop drawings go out for approval and come back marked up in red. Someone has to log every comment, make sure each one is fixed and send the new version out. Meanwhile a crew is building from the version before.

Then there are the questions. What is that dimension? Which detail covers this corner? The answer is in the set, but finding it takes a drafter away from drafting.

The costliest drawing on site is the one that was already replaced.

004/006Where AI helps

How can an AI Employee help with AutoCAD?

An AI Employee can be set up to read DWG files or their PDF exports. It can compare two versions and draft a list of what changed, so your team checks a short list instead of two full sets.

The AI Employee does the comparing and logging. Your team does the deciding.

When markups come back, it can log each comment in a list, link it to the sheet and flag the ones still open when the next version goes out. Nothing gets lost between rounds.

It can also send the right sheet to the right sub and keep a record of who got which version. You can try the free revision compare tool on two of your own sheets now.

How would we set it up?

Full AutoCAD can be extended with custom tools, and DWG files can be read outside it. We pick the route that fits how your drawings move today.

Start small. One project's markup log or one version check is the right first test.

  1. Pick one repeat job, such as comparing versions or logging markups.
  2. Gather a past set and the answer your team already checked.
  3. Confirm whether DWG or PDF is the better file to read.
  4. Set the rule that unclear notes get flagged, never guessed.
  5. Have the person who owns the job review the output before it goes out.
006/006Your next step

Should we keep paying for AutoCAD seats?

Keep AutoCAD for the people who draw. For people who mainly read, print and answer questions, check whether a free viewer plus an AI Employee covers what they do.

For some 2D and part work, an AI Employee can also work in FreeCAD, the free CAD tool. We would test that on a real drawing first, since the file has to work for whoever receives it.

FAQ

Questions owners ask

Is this an official AutoCAD plug-in?

No. VeebarTech is not an Autodesk partner, and we have not built this connection for clients yet. We scope a setup for your company using DWG files, PDF exports or the access full AutoCAD allows.

Does it work with AutoCAD LT?

LT cannot run custom tools, so we would work from the files it saves, DWG or PDF, rather than inside the program.

Can AI read a scanned or hand-marked drawing?

Often, but a blurry scan or messy handwriting can be misread. Anything unclear gets flagged for a person instead of guessed.

Will this replace our drafter?

No. It takes the logging, comparing and sending off your drafter's desk so they spend more of the day drawing.
