How do you make a scanned drawing searchable?
Run it through OCR, which reads the text in the image and adds a text layer to the PDF. Adobe Acrobat and Bluebeam can both do this. Then Ctrl+F finds tags, room names and notes.
What DPI should construction drawings be scanned at?
Ask for 300 DPI or more. Go higher for faded prints or very small text. Scan one sheet per file.
Does OCR work on hand-drawn plans?
Partly. Clean printed text reads well. Hand lettering, faded prints and text at an angle are harder, so someone should check the tags and sheet numbers.
How should construction drawing files be named?
Pick one name rule and use it on every file, like job number, sheet number, title and revision. Keep one sheet per file and an index of what you have. The name rule tool on this page builds one for you.
