How do I use past job costs to estimate a new job?
Group your finished jobs by type and work out the cost per square foot for each. Then adjust for size, location and price changes since.
Is cost per square foot accurate enough to price a job?
It is good for an early budget or a quick check. It is not a full estimate. Do a detailed takeoff before you sign a price.
How do I adjust old construction costs for inflation?
Use a construction price index for the date the job finished and for today. In Canada, Statistics Canada posts building construction price indexes in Table 18-10-0289-01. The tracker brings old costs up to today.
What is job costing in construction?
It is tracking what each job really cost, by labour, material, equipment and subs. Compare it to the estimate when the job ends. That shows where you made or lost money.
Should I use my own costs or published cost data?
